On June 8, 1967, the Israeli Air Force and Navy pounded the USS Liberty in international waters off the coast the Gaza Strip. The attack killed 34 American sailors and injured 171 others.
The US government first called back its own fighter jets, which were on route to engage the Israelis, and then attempted to conceal the events. No one was ever held accountable. This book recounts the attack and the associated political and diplomatic machinations that guided the US response.
